Bruce Blythe

Bruce Blythe got started in financial news in 1992 as a wire service reporter covering the livestock futures markets from the trading floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. He’s since worked for Dow Jones Newswires, Reuters, Bloomberg, and Crain’s Chicago Business, and was a managing editor for The Ticker Tape. He lives in the Chicago area with his wife, Kate, and daughters, Paige and Ellie.

What was the moment you realized the markets are where you wanted to be?
Back in ’92 I was hired to cover the ag markets, largely because I had an ag/farm background. But none of that prepared me for the trading floors. It looked like borderline chaos, and I had no idea what I was doing at first. Eventually I got a handle on it, and learned that markets are an exciting place to be—whether you’re on a trading floor or in a newsroom, good stories are happening somewhere. And if things seem slow, just wait a few minutes.

What’s the golden rule you live by?
This falls under “stuff my dad says,” but it basically comes down to: don’t sweat the small stuff, no whining, and always keep your cool.

Who’s your investing or trading idol?
I’m thinking of my favorite storytellers who chronicle the investing and trading worlds and all their colorful personalities. Michael Lewis is the modern master as far as I’m concerned, starting with Liar’s Poker, through Moneyball, Flash Boys, and more. Fiction, too: think Tom Wolfe, The Bonfire of the Vanities. Wall Street is a literary genre unto itself.

When not working, you can find me …
At Wrigley Field watching my World Champion Chicago Cubs, playing 12-inch softball in the city, or in my backyard pitching batting practice to my girls.

Tell us something the world doesn’t know about you.
I started my career as a sportswriter. I wanted to write for Sports Illustrated. Ending up in financial media was really kind of an accident. But eventually, I came to appreciate that both fields describe competitions over money.
